"What I do is very simple. It's Rock&Roll. People come to the shows, and it's music they can dance to, and have a good time. And listen to the songs and think: 'That's just how I feel... I'm not alone then'. Because I think it's very important that people don't feel alone". (Robert Caruso, BBC Radio interview, 2007)Robert Caruso was born in Cosenza, South Italy, on 13 March 1965. He first appeared in public in 1978, aged 13. In 1980 he debuted under the pseudonym of Rob Leer, as a singer-guitarist-songwriter, becoming the prime mover of an underground rock music scene in Cosenza which included bands like No Exit, Clockwork Orange, The Lager, Out of Order and The Splinters Of Hate. In 1983 he moved to Rome, and in 1984 RAI (Italian state television) had the first broadcast of Mimmo Rafele's film "Primi Amori" on national TV, in which Robert played a character based upon himself. In these years he toured all over Italy, and appeared on several TV and radio programs. Robert caused a small scandal which brought him some notoriety when during a television interview spoke of some of his songs dealing with the drug use of his fans, and he was accused - and risked being charged by the judiciary and the police - of inciting the public to commit a crime, i.e: the use of illegal substances; the scandal ensued also because Robert was still a minor at the time. In 1985 Robert moved to London, where he is based to this day. He lived a bohemian life and formed The Electric Kids, a rock band which had its roots in The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The Yardbirds, and The Doors. He became friends with Nico (the ex-Velvet Underground singer, also famous for her part in Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita") and Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan from The New York Dolls, among the many rock musicians who proved to be influential for his own music. His recordings from the 1980s are now collected in two albums: "Rob Leer & The Electric Kids 1980-88" (1989) is an anthology from his early days, when he performed and recorded in Cosenza, Rome and London, and includes songs from his earliest repertoire (Hon, We'll Rock & Have Fun, Waiting For You, Speed, Get Crazy, These Days, Indian Summer, etc... and demos like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, written for Nico). "Waiting For The Light" (1983) is an album-concept about the doomed love story of two adolescents living in a post-modern metropolis, which Robert recorded and produced single-handedly in the summer of 1983, aged 18, and in which his rock'n'roll roots met the techno-pop/electro sound of the early 1980s. The album included the singles A Boy And A Girl/Standing On The Balcony and You're Driving Me Insane/Twilight. These recordings originally circulated as cassettes in limited editions; they became available on CD only in the 1990s. From 1990, after a sojourn in Italy of six months in 1989 to solve the problem of his national service in the Italian Army, which he refused to do and which constrained him to be on the run and unable to enter Italy for four years, Robert started a second musical career as a solo artist under his real name, performing with Dobro slide guitar and harmonica, influenced by the Mississippi Delta Blues tradition and Indian and West African music, often sharing the same bill as legendary American Blues artists. He toured all over Europe and the USA between 1992 and 1997, publishing two self-produced albums ("Robert Caruso", 1993 and "London Underground Blues", 1994). He then signed with Acetone Recordings and released the album "When My Train Comes" (1995). "Live At The Splash Club" (1997) is a white label four-song promo recorded live in London. During these years of intense touring Robert got great reviews in the music press of different countries, acquiring in the process a faithful and passionate following.After touring constantly for several years, Robert decided to have a break from the music business and for the next few years dedicated himself to his love of philosophy and literature. He studied at Middlesex University in London, where in 2004 he obtained a BA in Philosophy and English Literary Studies, followed by an Italian Studies MA at University College London (UCL) in 2005. During this time he recorded two albums of instrumental music: the 'Lorelei Suite' (2000) was influenced by classical music and composed for a string quartet and orchestra; 'Zeitgeist' (2001) is made of Rock music performed on synthesizers and instrumental tracks recorded with strings, marimba, vibraphone, percussion and other instruments; both remain unreleased. In the meantime he played a few gigs on the university campuses where he studied. He then published two poetry collections: "Transcendence" (2003) was a collection of verse, and the "Sublimations" (2005) collected verse and prose poems. He became also the first English translator of the Scapigliatura, the Italian artistic movement of bohemian poets and writers of the late 19th century, (Emilio Praga, Igino Ugo Tarchetti, Giovanni Camerana, Arrigo Boito and Carlo Dossi). Robert is one of the most expert scholars in the world on the Scapigliatura: the Wikipedia entry (in English) on this subject is based on his work. Several of his poems appeared in literary magazines in different countries. In his writings it is possible to recognize the influence of classics such as Dante and Petrarch, Symbolism and Decadentism (Baudelaire and Rimbaud in particular), Romanticism, Edgar Allan Poe, and English metaphysical poets like John Donne. An Italian version of "Transcendence" was published in 2003, which included his only poems written in Italian. "Selected Poetry" was published in England in 2004 as a limited edition, containing a selection of poems from both "Transcendence" and the "Sublimations". He also translated some of his favourite poets from the English, German and French into Italian. Robert had already studied humanities at High School and briefly at the Sapienza University in Rome in 1983-85. To his previous studies of Italian Literature, Philosophy, History, Latin and ancient Greek, at the end of 2005 Robert had added a considerable knowledge of Metaphysics (including Theology and Hermeneutics), Aesthetics, and world Literature, in particular that of the 19th century.In 2006 Robert returned to Rock'n'Roll, started playing live with a backing band and recorded a whole bunch of new material. A "4 Song Promo" started to circulate at the end of the summer of 2007. It contained some of his best songs to date, such as Rebel, I Can Give You Nothing But Love, Days Of Wine And Roses, and Lisa, and was followed soon after by the "Ecce Homo" album.Over the years Robert Caruso has managed also to play with some of his heroes: from Elvis Presley's original band (Scotty Moore on guitar, and DJ Fontana on drums - bassist Bill Black had already passed when Robert met them -) to singing with The Yardbirds in the place of Keith Relf (who had died in 1976). A solid rhythm-section of drums and bass, the dramatic effect of his harmonica, the use of Boogie piano and 1960s Vox Continental organ, with the most devastating and distorted guitar sound, made of killer riffs, power chords and Blues licks, the crescendos and 'rave-ups', the drone of Arabic and Indian music, the control of feedback, and heartfelt performances, with sweet, melancholy and melodic vocals in contrast with the hardness of his Teardrop and Phantom Vox guitars sound are the distinctive and original traits of Robert Caruso's music. Being able to play guitars, bass, piano, organ, drums, and harmonica has contributed in making Robert a skilled musical arranger, and time and experience made him a capable producer in the recording studio. His style is a fusion of straightforward Rock&Roll, Psychedelic overtones, the passion of the Blues, and a funky beat, his poetic lyrics often portray urban landscapes and post-modern alienation, and often deal with a desire for transcendence through love, drugs, and spiritual fullfilment. If put all together his songs are found to deal with the most used theme of all time: love; but in Robert's case, alas, the lack of love in an often brutal world, where materialist concerns come before everything else, described in a realist and artistic style. A universal theme to which everyone can relate to and identify with. In other words, songs of journeys, freedom and dreams in a decadent world, about loving and wanting to be loved - which all human beings have in common - sometimes expressed in a moody, dark and Gothic existentialism, sometimes through a sunnier, idealist romanticism. All in the best Rock&Roll tradition, from Elvis Presley to Joy Division, going through Dylan, Lennon, Hendrix, Bowie, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Yardbirds, The Stooges, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, MC5, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc..In 2008 Robert did his first gigs in Italy in 12 years, to great public and critical acclaim. In 2009 he played a series of gigs in London from summer to the end of the year, and a New Year's Eve concert in Italy. His new album "Godspeed" was released in December 2009, with single Evangeline as trailer with promo video on YouTube. Robert keeps writing songs, recording and playing live wherever he is invited. Pubblico' due album autoprodotti ("Robert Caruso", 1993 e "London Underground Blues", 1994); ed un terzo per l'etichetta Acetone Recordings, "When My Train Comes" (1995). "Live At The Splash Club" è un promo di 4 canzoni registrato dal vivo a Londra ed usato solo per scopi promozionali nel 1997. In questi anni Robert fu costantemente "on tour" per tutta l'Europa ed anche negli USA tra il 1992 ed il 1997, acquistando schiere di fedeli fan un po' ovunque.
Robert decise poi di avere una pausa nella sua carriera musicale e si dedico' alla sua passione per filosofia e letteratura. Completò un BA in Filosofia e Letteratura Inglese alla Middlesex University di Londra nel 2004, e nel 2005 un MA in Italianistica alla University College London (UCL). In questo periodo incise due album strumentali mai pubblicati: "Lorelei Suite"(2000) contiene composizioni influenzate dalla musica classica e scritte per quartetti d'archi e orchestra. "Zeitgeist" (2001) e' fatto di musica Rock strumentale eseguita con sintetizzatori e marimba, vibrafono, percussioni e altri strumenti. Nel frattempo suono' dal vivo sui campus universitari dove era studente. Pubblico' "Transcendence", una collezione di versi nel 2003, e le "Sublimations", che includeva versi e poemi in prosa nel 2005. La versione italiana del primo libro apparse in Italia nel 2003 con il titolo "Trascendenza", nella quale erano incluse le poche poesie scritte in italiano. "Selected Poetry" fu pubblicata a Londra in edizione limitata nel 2004. Robert divento' il primo traduttore inglese dei poeti e scrittori italiani della Scapigliatura (Emilio Praga, Igino Ugo Tarchetti, Giovanni Camerana, Arrigo Boito e Carlo Dossi), il movimento artistico "bohemienne" italiano della fine del'800. Robert e' uno dei maggiori esperti del mondo sulla Scapigliatura: la pagina di Wikipedia (in inglese) su questa materia e' basata sui suoi scritti. Le sue poesie, nel frattempo, furono pubblicate su svariate riviste letterarie di diversi paesi. Nei suoi scritti si possono identificare influenze diverse, da classici come Dante e Petrarca al Decadentismo (Baudelaire e Rimbaud in particolare), il Romanticismo, Edgar Allan Poe, e i poeti metafisici inglesi quali John Donne. Ha fatto anche diverse traduzioni di alcuni dei suoi poeti preferiti dall'inglese, francese e tedesco in italiano. Nel 2006 Robert e' ritornato al Rock'n'Roll, riprese a suonare dal vivo con una band e registro' materiale nuovo. Nell'estate del 2007 inizio' a circolare il "4 Song Promo" che conteneva alcune delle sue migliori canzoni, quali Rebel, I Can Give You Nothing But Love, Days Of Wine And Roses e Lisa, seguito subito dopo dall'album "Ecce Homo".Nel corso degli anni Robert ha anche avuto modo di suonare con alcuni dei suoi eroi: dall'originale band di Elvis Presley (Scotty Moore alla chitarra e DJ Fontana alla batteria - bassista Bill Black era gia' morto quando Robert li incontro' -) agli Yardbirds, al posto di Keith Relf (scomparso nel 1976). Una solida sezione ritmica di basso e batteria, il drammatico uso dell'armonica, l'utilizzo di piano Boogie e dell'organo Vox Continental degli anni '60, il suono distorto e devastante della sua chitarra elettrica, fatto di riffs assassini, potenti accordi e "licks" Blues, il controllo di feedback, i crescendo, le sonorita' del "drone" della musica indiana e arabica, le appassioniate e sentite interpretrazioni di una voce dolce, malinconica e melodica, in contrasto con la durezza delle sue chitarre Vox (i classici modelli Teardrop e Phantom), sono i tratti salienti e originali dello stile e della musica di Robert Caruso. Robert canta, e oltre alla chitarra suona anche basso, pianoforte, organo, batteria e armonica, e cio' ha contribuito a renderlo un'esperto arrangiatore musicale, cosi' come l'esperienza lo ha reso un capace produttore in sala d'incisione. Il suo stile e' una fusione di Rock&Roll, con toni psichedelici, la passione dei Blues e ritmi funky, i suoi testi poetici spesso rappresentano paesaggi metropolitani e alienazione post-moderna, e spesso esprimono un desiderio di trascendenza attraverso l'amore, le droghe, e la ricerca della spiritualita'. Prese assieme le sue canzoni parlano del tema da sempre piu' usato: l'amore; ma nel caso di Robert si tratta della mancanza d'amore in un mondo materialista. Un tema universale narrato in uno stile artistico e realista, che tutti comprendono e in cui tutti si possono identificare. Canzoni che parlano di viaggi, liberta' e sogni, in un mondo decadente, del voler amare ed essere amati: cioe' quello che accomuna tutti gli esseri umani. Canzoni espresse a volte in uno stile tenebroso, gotico ed esistenzialista, altre volte in modo piu' idealista e romantico. Il tutto nella tradizione del piu' autentico e migliore Rock&Roll, da Elvis Presley ai Joy Division, attraverso Dylan, Lennon, Hendrix, Bowie, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, i Rolling Stones, gli Who, i Kinks, i Doors, gli Yardbirds, i Velvet Undeground, gli Stooges, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, MC5, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Ramones, ecc..Nel 2008 Robert fece i primi concerti in Italia dopo 12 anni, con grande successo di critica e pubblico. Nel 2009 ha fatto una serie di concerti a Londra dall'estate fino a dicembre, e un concerto di Vigilia di Capodanno in Italia. Il suo nuovo album "Godspeed" è uscito alla fine del 2009, con il video del singolo Evangeline su YouTube. Robert Caruso continua a scrivere canzoni, ad incidere e a suonare dal vivo ovunque egli sia invitato. Vive a Londra.
