CATANIA
Una ondulazione alta d'argento,
silenziosa nella trasparenza
notturna; una nival magnificenza
diafana nell'aria senza vento;
una ondulazion di monumento
bianca e suprema, una fosforescenza
lunar sotto la astral fosforescenza
diafana nell'aria senza vento;
tale in sua tregua il bieco Etna regnava.
Sul gran cono era l' Orsa; il formidabile
nel ponente Orion superbo ardea.
E ardea, nel pian, Catania. Rutilava
laggiù, come una sbarra interminabile
di fuoco e d'or, la immane strada Etnea. (1894)

CATANIA
A high, silvery wave
silent in the transparency
nocturnal; a snowy magnificence
diaphanous in the windless air;
a curve, like a statue, a monument,
white and supreme, a phosphorecence
lunar below the astral phosphorecence
diaphanous in the motionless atmosphere;
so in its truce, the evil Etna reigned.
Above its cone was the Bear; the formidable
Orion in the west haughtily burned.
And burned, in the plain, Catania. Glowing
red down there, like an interminable barrier
of fire and gold, the huge Etnean road. (1894)
