VENDETTA POSTUMA
Quando sarai nel freddo monumento
immobile e stecchita,
se ti resta nel cranio un sentimento
di questa vita,
ripenserai l'alcova e il letticciuolo
dei nostri lunghi amori,
quand'io portava al tuo dolce lenzuolo
carezze e fiori.
Ripenserai la fiammella turchina
che ci brillava accanto;
e quella fiala che alla tua bocchina
piaceva tanto!
Ripenserai la tua foga omicida,
e gli immensi abbandoni;
ripenserai le forsennate grida,
e le canzoni;
ripenserai le lagrime delire,
e i giuramenti a Dio,
o bugiarda, di vivere e morire
pel genio mio!
E allora sentirai l'onda dei vermi
salir nel tenebrore,
e colla gioia di affamati infermi
morderti il cuore.

POSTHUMOUS REVENGE
When you shall be in the cold monument
motionless and dead,
if there remains some memory of this life
in your head,
you will remember our long loves,
the bed and the bower,
when I used to bring to your pillow
caresses and flowers.
You will think of our purple lamp
that used to shine so bright,
and of that potion* that you thought
was out of sight!
You will recall your killer rage
and our abandons, complete and long;
you will remember your mad screaming
and the songs;
you will think of the delirious tears
swearing on God, crossing your heart,
to live and die - you liar -
for my art!
And then you shall feel the worms
coming through the darkness and the cold,
and with the joy of parasite vermin
grip your soul.
