Io vado errando lontano dalla mia patria
Io vado errando lontano dalla mia patria, e veggo aggirarsi per l'aria
una foglia di cipresso trasportata dal vento. Dove te ne vai, o piccola
foglia di cipresso, dove te ne vai? Noi ci faremo compagnia. Nello stesso
modo che tu vieni trasportata pel cielo dal turbine impetuoso, io sono
cacciato dal mio destino per terre non conosciute... Ohimè! tu
non potrai più ritornare al tuo albero! povera foglia! povera foglia!
Maledetta la mano che ti ha distaccata dal tuo ramo. Io sono pure allontanato
dalla mia patria da una mano maledetta. Precedimi, o piccola foglia di
cipresso nel cammino doloroso dell'esiglio: il mio destino non sarà
mai diverso dal tuo; tu anzi sopravviverai forse a me stesso, e sbattuta
dopo tanti anni dal vento, verrai un giorno a riposarti inconsapevole
sul mio sepolcro. Precedimi, dunque, o povera foglia, noi ci faremo compagnia.
Giovine ancora, senza affetti e senza speranze, io vado errando sulla
terra come una foglia trasportata dal vento.
I GO WANDERING FAR AWAY FROM HOME...
I go wandering far away from home and I see a cypress leaf circling up in
the air, blown by
the wind. Where are you going, o little cypress leaf ? We shall keep each
other company.
Just as you are blown across the sky by the impetous wind, I am taken by
my destiny over
strange lands...Poor me! You will never be able to go back to your tree!
Poor leaf! Damned
be the hand that snapped you from the tree's branch. I am pushed out of
my country by an
evil hand too. Go on, o little cypress leaf, go ahead in the sorrowful path
of exile: my fate
won't be different from yours; actually, you may survive me and after having
been blown by
the wind for many years, one day you shall come down to rest, unaware, upon
my grave.
Go ahead of me, poor leaf, we shall keep each other company. Still young
and yet without
love nor hope, I go wandering in the world like a leaf blowing in the wind.
